After some manual removals and scans and such all was good with firefox, chrome, and all other methods and ports accessing the outside world minus whatever that IE hijack was. Could only install and run in safe mode. Apparently the virus must have check the proxy box and perhaps put its web address in and that was why I could only go to their web page. It could be something with these old toolbars, but then why is there more than a few people getting this problem.

I can't believe it was as simple as that. It started when I was infected with one of those fake virus scanner programs - XP Defender 2010 (av.exe).
