AEA KU4: Hyper-Cardioid Ribbon Microphone Kicks It New Old School At AES 2010 (Video)
gearwireWhether it's rockin' the wizard-like stovepipe or waxing historical on ribbon microphone design, Wes Dooley is the man. He was presenting his newest microphone, the AEA KU4, at the recent 129th AES show in San Francisco, where Gino Robair caught up with Wes to find out more about this mic's throw-back design and rich heritage. What follows is not only an exhaustive technical description of how to produce a unidirectional (cardioid) mic — like the AES KU4 — using a natively figure-eight element like a ribbon transducer. Hint: the secret lies within "The Labyrinth."From: gearwireViews: 686

Gingrich At AEA 08: Progress, Technology, Aviation! (Part 2)
aerotvnetworkFormer House Speaker Talks Aviation To The Aircraft Electronics Association Newt Gingrich's high-energy luncheon speech at the 2008 Aircraft Electronic Association annual convention provided more than a little opportunity for some thought-provoking discussion throughout the annual gathering. No matter what you think of the man or his politics, Gingrich was knowledgeable and well-prepared to speak on aviation matters to an aviation-centric audience... who seemed more than interested in what the former House Speaker had to say. Gingrich covered ALL the bases... progress, technology, education, ATC, Airspace, GPS, airports... you name it. Despite being out of office for several years, Gingrich remains a prominent and compelling figure in the Republican Party, as well as the Washington political scene. Gingrich spoke during the AEA's main luncheon on Friday, April 25, at the Gaylord National Resort in Washington, DC. AEA says Gingrich gives audiences the "big picture" view of the issues at stake in the upcoming presidential election, and the future of the country after the votes are cast. He draws on his years in the front lines of politics and his current role as a leading figure in entrepreneurial and technological advances to discuss the current political climate in Washington and offer an up-to-the-minute look at today's issues and events. A prolific author, Gingrich has published several fiction and nonfiction best sellers. His nonfiction books include "Winning the ...From: aerotvnetworkViews: 349

Aero-TV At AEA 2008: Xerion's AuRACLE CRM2100 (Part 3)
aerotvnetworkRetrofittable 21st Century Engine Management... At Last! AEA 2008 gave the Aero-TV crew a chance to not only get up close and personal with the AuRACLE CRM 2100 but the twin-engine, the CRM 2120... and we came away convinced that Xerion Avionix has been thinking up some great things. With all the emphasis being given on retrofitting and upgrading attitude, navigation and communication displays, it's an honest pleasure to see a solid effort to bring 21st Century technology to engine data and management -- especially when it looks THIS good. Xerion tells ANN that the AuRACLE CRM2100 is a dual-box networked system. where the system's EIU (Engine Interface Unit) is mounted on the engine-side of the firewall and where ALL engine sensors connect directly to the EIU, 'over there.' The engine data is transmitted via a networked CAN bus to the Display Unit using a single bulkhead connector on the firewall. From there, a second cable marries up with the DU. Xerion notes that this networked system 'reduces wire runs, thereby significantly reducing installation costs and is very advantageous for pressurized aircraft.' The AuRACLE CRM2100 networked system architecture also allows for future expansion to communicate with other networked Xerion engine monitoring systems. Hosted by the AeA Board of Directors, more than 500 people attended the dinner including numerous Chief Information Officers and procurement officials from over 25 different Federal agencies, officials and leadership from the Administration and Congress, and dozens of CEO's representing high-tech companies. Ms. Mulcahy provided the keynote address at the dinner, which has become a premier event featuring leaders from both the public and private sectors. Mulcahy spoke on the importance of research and development (R&D) for Xerox, specifically how two-thirds of the company's revenues come from products designed in the past two years, and how investments in R&D and math and science education initiatives by the federal government are critical to the United States' competitiveness in the global marketplace. "America itself is failing to invest in our own future and to nurture our own technological infrastructure -- the very infrastructure that has propelled us to world economic leadership," said Mulcahy. "If we won't start to address the issue now, we run the very real risk of losing our world leadership. And no one sector can fix the problem alone. It's the shared responsibility of business, government, and education." Mulcahy discussed solutions, including lowering the barriers for the immigration of ...From: AeAVideosViews: 2948

Not only a great guy, Wes Dooley has a wealth of information and we were extremely happy and grateful to have spent the day with him. We thought this would make for a great opportunity to share our experience with you - our friends. Therefore, we decided to shoot an hour long question-and-answer video with Wes, in which he dives into his background, the history of the ribbon microphone, the design and construction philosophy and process at AEA, and the state of the pro-audio and recording industry in general. Throughout the interview, Wes proved to be one of the most interesting speakers we have ever had at Front End Audio through his recounts of product testimonials, impromptu radio and announcer skits, and vast historical knowledge. We will be posting this video in segments over the next few weeks so keep checking back to our linked page. Also, we captured some great footage of Wes in our in-house studio with the A840, A440, and R92 microphones.
