• AEA KU4: Hyper-Cardioid Ribbon Microphone Kicks It New Old School At AES 2010 (Video)

Whether it's rockin' the wizard-like stovepipe or waxing historical on ribbon microphone design, Wes Dooley is the man. He was presenting his newest microphone, the AEA KU4, at the recent 129th AES show in San Francisco, where Gino Robair caught up with Wes to find out more about this mic's throw-back design and rich heritage. What follows is not only an exhaustive technical description of how to produce a unidirectional (cardioid) mic — like the AES KU4 — using a natively figure-eight element like a ribbon transducer. Hint: the secret lies within "The Labyrinth."

  • AEA A840 Active Ribbon Microphone Introduced by Wes Dooley at AES, October 2009

www.soundpure.com Ribbon Microphone Wizard Wes Dooley introduces the world to the new A840 Active Ribbon Microphone at the New York City AES (Audio Engineering Society) Exhibits October, 2009. Designed to be a cross between a more affordable A440 Active Big Ribbon Mic (AEA's other active ribbon, also the quietest and most detailed ribbon microphone ever produced, but with a $5k price tag), and the R84 affordable ribbon (that sounds incredibly warm and smooth but requires tremendous preamp gain, this new A840 is destined to be a tremendous success... it's street price is designed to be well under 2-grand. Loads of detail, dynamic range (high SPL of 141 dB and low self noise of 17.5 dB), and the famous AEA ribbon sound will make this extremely versatile and user friendly even on acoustic instruments where it's tougher to make traditional ribbons operate. Hugely wide frequency response add to the fact that this microphone is going to be versatile accross the studio and orchestra. Wes Dooley of AEA visits Front End Audio. For more info visit www.frontendaudio.com Legendary ribbon microphone designer Wes Dooley visited Front End Audio to spend the day with our staff and in the studio showing AEA's latest ribbon microphones and newest ribbon microphone preamplifier, the RPQ. Not only a great guy, Wes Dooley has a wealth of information and we were extremely happy and grateful to have spent the day with him. We thought this would make for a great opportunity to share our experience with you - our friends. Therefore, we decided to shoot an hour long question-and-answer video with Wes, in which he dives into his background, the history of the ribbon microphone, the design and construction philosophy and process at AEA, and the state of the pro-audio and recording industry in general. Throughout the interview, Wes proved to be one of the most interesting speakers we have ever had at Front End Audio through his recounts of product testimonials, impromptu radio and announcer skits, and vast historical knowledge. We will be posting this video in segments over the next few weeks so keep checking back to our linked page. Also, we captured some great footage of Wes in our in-house studio with the A840, A440, and R92 microphones. We recorded audio clips of the session that include acoustic guitar, electric guitar, male vocal, spoken word segments featuring Wes himself, and a special acoustic performance by Josh Roberts from Josh Roberts And The Hinges. • AEA A440 Ribbon Microphone @ FrontEndAudio.com

nspired by AEA's forty years of experience with ribbon mics, particularly 44s, this mic has the greatest useable dynamic range of any ribbon microphone manufactured today. The A440 is also the quietest ribbon microphone in existence. At the low frequency end the A440 delivers bass with effortless authority. It has a flat frequency response and holds an accurate figure-eight polar pattern down to 20 Hz. The A440 has a smooth and articulate midrange, and at the high end, transients are quick and detailed without hard edges. Musicians and engineers say that what they hear during playback, is exactly what they heard in the studio. It is one of the best sounding mics ever made for recording acoustic music.

  • AeA Testimonial by Anne Mulcahy, Chairperson & CEO, Xerox

Anne M. Mulcahy, the Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Xerox Corporation led a list of luminaries that attended AeA's Annual High Tech Government dinner on June 8, 2005. Hosted by the AeA Board of Directors, more than 500 people attended the dinner including numerous Chief Information Officers and procurement officials from over 25 different Federal agencies, officials and leadership from the Administration and Congress, and dozens of CEO's representing high-tech companies. Ms. Mulcahy provided the keynote address at the dinner, which has become a premier event featuring leaders from both the public and private sectors. Mulcahy spoke on the importance of research and development (R&D) for Xerox, specifically how two-thirds of the company's revenues come from products designed in the past two years, and how investments in R&D and math and science education initiatives by the federal government are critical to the United States' competitiveness in the global marketplace. "America itself is failing to invest in our own future and to nurture our own technological infrastructure -- the very infrastructure that has propelled us to world economic leadership," said Mulcahy. "If we won't start to address the issue now, we run the very real risk of losing our world leadership. And no one sector can fix the problem alone. It's the shared responsibility of business, government, and education." Mulcahy discussed solutions, including lowering the barriers for the immigration of ...
